Monday, June 19, 2023: Before 7:00 AM, we awoke to the startling sounds of the trees being trimmed around the complex.
There was a surprising amount of debris to clean up after they trimmed the palm trees close to the condo. It was the first time that we'd seen a palm tree being trimmed, and it was fascinating.
We were relieved to see it all cleaned up in time for us to put the beds out onto the carport. They would be picked up sometime between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
After Doug left for the airport around 9:30 AM, Debbie started the last load of laundry, Tom made two final runs to Goodwill with the kitchen table and chairs and the last of the boxes, ...
... and then he took all of the batteries that we'd found over the last week to Batteries Plus to be recycled. Batteries Plus was located next to a vacuum cleaner store that was a Kirby authorized service center. That's relevant because Ralph's vacuum cleaner was a Kirby. It was made from steel and appeared to have been made during the space race, but in fact was made in 2015. It ended up at Goodwill with the last load of stuff.
We left the condo just before noon and headed to Venezia's Pizzeria to meet our friend Karen and her husband, Freddy, for lunch.
Karen and Freddy were from New Jersey so they are pizza connoisseurs, and this was Freddy's favorite pizza place in Arizona.
It was pizza by the slice, and it was really good. Debbie had a slice of chicken pesto pizza that she really enjoyed, and Tom had three slices of whatever the special-of-the-day was. He shared part of his third slice with Debbie.
Here are Karen and Freddy. We had a really good time with them, and it was great to see Karen in casual clothes away from the office.
On the way back to the condo, we passed two Elders on bicycles and wondered if they were the same ones that had served at the ice cream social.
Back at the condo, the mattresses were still on the carport. We were anxious for the company to come by and get them soon.
Let's take a tour of the completely cleaned and empty condo, starting with the back bedroom. This is the vanity area outside the bathroom, ...
... and here's the rest of the bedroom.
This is the front bedroom looking toward the closet, ...
... and the view looking back toward the door.
Here's the kitchen looking toward the front door, ...
... and the hall closet. We were leaving a small collection of cleaning supplies for the new owner.
Here's the main bathroom, ...
... and the dining room, ...
... and the living room.
Almost exactly six days after we arrived, we had everything loaded back into the van, we locked the keys in the condo, ...
... and we were getting ready to pull away when a car pulled up behind us. It was the woman who had stopped by when we were returning the U-Haul the day before. She had a different daughter-in-law with her today, and this one was a licensed realtor. She had reactivated her real estate license to help her mother-in-law hopefully buy our condo but it wouldn't go into effect until tomorrow. Unfortunately, we had just locked ourselves out, intentionally, and couldn't show them the place this time either, so we encouraged them to peer through the windows as much as they wanted.
We dropped off a bag of tissue boxes on the table outside the clubhouse for people to take, and then we were leaving Casa de Paz, probably for the last time.
We treated ourselves to Oreo McFlurries as we headed toward the highway to leave Phoenix. Debbie texted our realtor to let her know that the condo was now vacant, and our realtor called her back to fill her in on recent developments. The woman we had just seen at the condo had talked to our realtor twice already which was good to hear. We'd also had an offer! Sadly, it was for less than our asking price, and we decided to reject it rather than counter.
As we headed toward Buckeye, we passed a giant baby billboard. It was originally an ad for Duncan Family Farms on I-10 until it was removed during some road construction in 2013. In 2020, it reappeared in field owned by the farm on the AZ-303 loop. They had to remake the giant baby, but they wanted to restore this iconic billboard to the area.
We were approaching the edge of the known world just past Surprise on way to Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Jon's house.
Oooh, a dust devil.
We arrived at Evelyn and Jon's neighborhood, ...
... and a little more than an hour after we left the condo, we had Debbie's purse and were headed out of the Phoenix area.
As we drove through Gila Bend, we passed this F-101 Voodoo outside the airport.
The Gila Bend Mountains looked rugged and beautiful off in the distance.
Check out this Best Western, uh, this Space Age Lodge, rather.
We probably should have slowed down to get a better photo, but we were hungry, and ...
... Burger King was calling our names.
Soon after we got back on I-8 headed west, we passed the Solana Generating Station. Those aren't solar panels. They are mirrors. This is a solar thermal power station, which uses the sun to generate steam.
The southwest is very beautiful, in a rugged, no-nonsense kind of way.
Hey. That's a fairly large city ahead. It must be Yuma, our destination for today.
We checked in to the Comfort Inn & Suites, where we were certain that our hotel room was larger than the condo we just left. Just after we got into the room, Debbie received an email from our realtor with another offer, this one even lower than the first. We were happy that we were getting offers, but we were disappointed that they were going in the wrong direction. We rejected this offer as well. The condo had only been on the market for three days at this point, and we weren't in any hurry.
The clouds were breaking and it looked like it was going to be another sunny day tomorrow.
Sunset. We spent some time relaxing and repacking our gear. We would be leaving the blistering heat of Arizona tomorrow and getting to cooler weather in southern California, so we needed to have long sleeve shirts and pants available for the first time in over a week.
