Friday, June 16, 2023: You're probably thinking: isn't this a photo of yesterday's lunch? No, this is today's lunch! We had already been up for a while, continuing to clean and work through the items on our to-do list.
Tom moved the rocking chairs and found yet another dead cockroach under one of them. We convinced ourselves that it had been in the chair when we moved them for the realty photos, and only fell out when we moved them again.
When we were packing up Ralph's books to give to Goodwill, Debbie found a Norwegian textbook that was the exact book she had used when she took Norwegian in college. She looked up a few phrases for old time's sake.
Kelner, kan jeg få regningen? "Waiter, can I get the check?" This is after using the phrase Jeg skal ha et glass øl, which means "I shall have a glass of beer."
Jeg sprang så fort jeg kunne - "I ran as fast as I could."
Debbie's brother, Doug, flew in from Seattle around noon to help with getting the condo ready for sale. They got the Debbie-taking-a-picture-of Doug-taking-a picture-of-Debbie thing out of the way as soon as he got in.
We had found remenants of 3M gift boxes in almost every closet and cupboard in the condo. One of the best memories that we had from cleaning out the condo next door in 2020 was the schoolyard pick of leftover 3M gift box items, so we poured all of the stuff that we'd found in a big pile on the living room floor. Before we got started with the pick, we each made a guess as to which item would be picked last.
Doug had guessed correctly. A partially used roll of clear tape was the last item picked.
Here's Tom with his loot, ...
... and Doug with his, ...
... and here's Debbie's loot.
Wow! There was an antique metal hand bell among Ralph's stuff that he hadn't wanted to take with him, and neither Rod nor Colleen wanted. It was identical to one that Debbie and Doug had growing up and that we have in our house. It was nicknamed "The Sick Bell" because they used it during their childhood when they were sick in bed and needed to summon their mom for something. It makes a remarkably loud and distinctive noise. This one went home with Doug so now they both have one.
Packing up the dishware and other kitchen items was an ongoing project, and now it was time to sort the silverware.
There was a large amount of silverware, but almost none of them were a matched set. There would occasionally be three or four of the same item, but all of the rest were unique. We cleaned it all and packed it up for Goodwill.
We put together a bag of cleaning supplies to take to the clubhouse to give away, ...
... along with all of the non-expired food and canned goods. We took a box of food home with us too, mostly puddings and pie fillings to make some of the tasty recipes Ralph had sent us over the years, but also some seasonings and marinades.
At 3 PM, we went to the clubhouse for the weekly ice cream social. Debbie had a cup of pistachio ice cream, which was served by Mormon Elders who were in their late teens or early twenties. We put everything that we brought with us on a table at the front of the room, along with some empty bags for convenience, and the other condo residents at the social took almost everything. There were only a few cans left when the ice cream social was ending, and one of the women insisted that the Elders take the food with them when they left, even after the Elders tried to explain that they had ridden bicycles to the complex and that it would be hard to carry canned goods with them. And that's on top of the fact that the only items remaining were such undesirable items as canned sliced carrots and baking soda - just what a twenty-year-old boy on a bicycle needs.
Here's a brief tour of the outside of the condo. Here's the front of the condo with a pretty tree with lovely yellow flowers, ...
... and the back with lots of different plants.
There is a lime tree in the backyard, ...
... and another citrus tree, possibly also a lime, but every unripe citrus fruit starts out looking like a lime, doesn't it?
Around 6 PM, all three of us piled into the van and made another trash run, ...
... and another Goodwill run, ...
... and then headed to Rudy's Country Store and BBQ for dinner.
We got a half pound of brisket, a half pound of ribs, and a whole sausage link, with a side of baked beans and corn-on-the-cob.
Debbie got a text from our realtor before dinner that the condo listing was now live. We'll clink to that! Cheers!
After dinner, we headed to Fry's Marketplace to do some grocery shopping. Doug posed with a twelve pack of Hard Mountain Dew, but decided against buying it. We bought some more Diet Coke, a half gallon of milk, some bananas, Hostess Ho Ho Bites, and a couple of bottles of Mountain Dew.
The sun was setting as we headed back to the condo, ...
... where we admired the realtor's lockbox on the front door. With any luck, it would get used heavily over the next few days.
As we sat and chatted for a while before bedtime, we got a text from our realor requesting a showing tomorrow at 10 AM. Someone was interested! Yay! We made plans to be out of the condo for the morning.
