Wednesday, June 14, 2023: With lots to do, we were up very early. Debbie talked to Clara, the neighbor across the carport who had bought her dad's condo, and suggested that she take any of the furniture in the condo that she wanted. She selected five or six things, including the large stand mirror and the coffee table, which was very helpful.
Whenever we accumulated a van-load of stuff to give away, Tom would take it to the nearby Goodwill store. He would also take a load of trash to the complex's dumpsters on the way. On the third or fourth trip, he noticed the serial number on the shipping container that was nearby. Maersk!
Ralph's daughter, Colleen, had come by early this morning to continue going through her dad's papers. When she finished up around 9:00 AM, she took with her the paintings, portaits, and other family heirlooms that she was keeping.
At 9:30 AM, we met with our realtor. We had used her to sell the condo next door three years earlier, and everything had gone so smoothly that we were really excited to work with her again (and to meet her in person for the first time). Before she left, we confirmed that we would be ready for her and her photographer to come back tomorrow to take photos of the condo to use for the listing.
One unpleasant fact about Arizona is that it has cockroaches. When we took out the desk and filing cabinet from the back bedroom, we found the first of a shocking large number of dead cockroaches under every piece of furniture that we moved.
Around lunchtime, Tom took Ralph's walker over to the clubhouse to donate to anyone who might want it. After leaving it with the maintenance man who was sweeping up inside, Tom went back outside to check Ralph's mailbox.
On the way, he noticed that one of the bulletin boards on the outside of the clubhouse had postings for each of the units in the complex that were for sale.
Here's the back of the clubhouse, with the mailboxes on the left, the fence for the pool area to the right, and another bulletin board at the far end.
Each unit has a mailbox at the clubhouse, ...
... and Ralph's box had a sticker on it. There was junk mail in the box, but nothing of any importance that we needed to get to Ralph.
Here's the other bulletin board at the clubhouse. There was a notice in the center section of the board for the Spam cook-off that was happening at the clubhouse on Saturday. It had been Ralph's idea, and we thought it would be a good idea for us to go to it in his place.
When Tom made his frequent trips to Goodwill to drop stuff off, usually he was the only vehicle at the donation center. This time, there were two panel trucks and several vans, and he had to wait in line. Goodwill was hoppin'.
Check out this beautiful artwork that Ralph's wife made from family jewelry. This was another treasure that Colleen would be taking home with her.
By early afternoon, we had given away enough furniture that we could clean the carpets. Tom made a trip to Lowe's and bought a carpet cleaner, ...
... and got to work.
It's time for a treat! These cotton candy flavored Oreos were delicious!
We were eating sandwiches for dinner when Phyllis, Ralph's girlfriend, and her daughter Julie stopped by to get more clothes for Ralph.
After dinner, we took another load of stuff over to Goodwill, stopping by Rod's condo to drop off some of Ralph's stuff that Colleen wanted him to hold onto for Ralph, ...
... including Ralph's Dish TV receiver that needed to be returned so that Ralph wouldn't get charged for it. Later that night, Phyllis and Julie came back looking for a Dish TV node that was mounted on the outside of the house so that it could be returned with the receiver.
When we got back, Tom took down the name plate that Ralph had put up over his carport. We were delighted to see that the paint underneath still matched and that it wasn't horribly obvious that we had taken it down.
It's a good thing that the Goodwill store was only about a mile away because Tom was averaging four or five trips per day at this point.
Here's the donation drop-off door at the back of the store, ...
... and here's the alley to get back out to the street where you can still make a left-hand turn to get back to the condo complex.
By 8:30 PM, the carpet was dry, so we shifted the furniture over to the newly cleaned area and then cleaned the rest of the living room and hallway carpet. We thought it would be a idea to pull up the black throw rug that Ralph had by the carport door, and to our shock and horror, we realized that he had glued it down. With some effort, we were able to get it unstuck so that we could clean the carpet all around where it had been. The glue would not come up though, so once the carpet was dry again, we had to put the throw rug back.
