Plant: Spring Snowdrops
Source: Van Bourgondien, Van Dyck's
Quantity: 40
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Mid-January - Mid-February
Notes: Planted 10 in the front garden in 2003. Bloomed for the first time in 2005. Planted 30 more on 10/3/05. These do better every year and are consistently the earliest thing to bloom in my garden.

Plant: Snowdrop "Elwesii"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 9/5/09
Blooms: Mid-February
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. Doing fine. These are a little larger than the two mystery cultivars in the front garden.

Plant: Snow Crocus "Firefly"
Source: Van Bourgondien, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 70
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Early February - Early March
Notes: Planted 20 in back garden in partial shade. They are plastic Easter Egg purple when closed, and paler purple when opened. I had some Louisiana irises that spread over the tops of these, and there were only a handful left when I finally got rid of the irises, so I planted 50 more bulbs from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2009 because these are pretty.

Plant: Crocus - yellow and purple mix
Source: Menard's
Quantity: 40
Planted: Fall 2002
Blooms: Early February - Early March
Notes: This is a mix of bright yellow, pale yellow, and lavender snow crocuses. The dark and light yellow blooms appear first, followed by the purple blooms two or three weeks later.

Plant: Crocus "Joan of Arc" / "Jeanne d'Arc"
Source: Meijer
Quantity: 40
Planted: Fall 2002
Blooms: Early March
Notes: Planted in the kitchen garden in partial shade. Hardy and reliable.

Plant: Crocus "Flower Record"
Source: Breck's, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 75
Planted: 10/15/04
Blooms: Mid-March
Notes: Planted 25 under weeping cherry tree in front. These are tall and came back much stronger their second season, but then tanked after that. Victim of chipmunks? Don't know. Planted 50 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2009 in front garden that have started out well.

Plant: Crocus "Ruby Giant"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 50
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Late March
Notes: These are true purple, but this photo washed out the colors. I highly recommend these flowers. Planted in back garden. The chipmunks discovered these bulbs in summer 2007 and dug up as many as they could. Fortunately, there were a lot of bulbs to start with but I'm down to a dozen or so now.

Plant: Crocus "Minimus"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 30
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in back garden. These are disappointing, because they're relatively expensive and look much better in the catalogs. They lack the strong blue markings that differentiate it from standard pale purple crocus. Didn't bloom in 2008 and 2009 because the rabbits eat them, but bloomed fairly well in 2010.

Plant: Scilla "Siberian Squill"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 20
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Late March
Notes: These are very bright blue, and add a great burst of color for such a little plant. Moved these from the back garden to the kitchen garden to fill in the space between the Stella d'Oro daylilies. Normally, I'm rabid about deadheading, but I let these go to seed among the daylilies so they'll spread faster.

Plant: Scilla siberica "Alba"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 50
Planted: 10/22/05
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in back garden. These are very cute little plants and are spreading quickly every year by heavy reseeding, so I have to thin them out as much as I can.

Plant: Scilla "Rosea"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/28/07
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. These have tinier blooms than our other scilla. They are very pale pink but my camera just can't capture it.

Plant: Puschkinia scilloides "Alba"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 50
Planted: 10/22/05
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. These range from white to light blue and are even cuter than scilla siberica.

Plant: Puschkinia scilloides var libanotica
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 50
Planted: 10/22/05
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in back garden. Only a handful came back in 2007, and they did very poorly in 2008 and 2009, but they're rebounding a bit in 2010 and more in 2011.

Plant: Glory of the Snow Mix
Source: Van Bourgondien, Van Dyck's
Quantity: 94
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted 40 pink and blue glory of the snow in the back garden. We dug these up on 4/17/05 and moved to a different location to make room for other plants. Planted 54 more pink, blue, and white plants on 10/9/05. I don't like mixes, but that's just how this group of bulbs ended up. The pink blooms first, then the blue, then the white.

Plant: Muscari "Blue Magic"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 50
Planted: Fall 2007
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted 50 in front garden where old grape hyacinths were before they were disturbed by digging up a large tree. I was expecting these to be more bi-color than they are -- they aren't darker at the bottom of the bloom, but they are pretty little flowers anyway.

Plant: White Muscari
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 55
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early April
Notes: These grape hyacinths are planted under the Japanese maple tree. They were transplanted from a different location in spring 2005 and have taken well to their new home.

Plant: Hyacinth "Jan Bos"
Source: Lowe's, Van Dyck's, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted 6 from Lowe's in fall 2003. Described as scarlet, they appeared red in some photos and dark pink in other photos. I'm relieved to report that they are dark pink and look great in the garden. The blooms were smaller and thinner their second year after being transplanted to a different location. Planted 4 more from Van Dyck's in fall 2005. Planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2009, and moved the remaining four bulbs to join them. Four more came up in the old spot so we moved them to join the others in April 2010. These were my most reliable hyacinths but only one came back in 2011, so I think they're being eaten by voles.

Plant: Hyacinth "Pink Pearl"
Source: Van Dyck's, Meijer, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 28
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted 12 in front garden. Very sturdy, pretty blooms. Came back well in 2006, but not quite as well in 2007, and even worse in 2008, possibly due to bad soil and carpet phlox that are smothering them. Added six more plants in bloom from Meijer in spring 2008. Planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2009, and moved the remaining six bulbs to join them. Two more came up in the old spot so we moved them to join the others in April 2010.

Plant: Hyacinth "Delft Blue"
Source: Van Dyck's, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 22
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted 12 in front garden. Come back fairly well every year but are dwindling a bit. Planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2009.

Plant: Hyacinth "Peter Stuyvesant"
Source: Van Dyck's, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 22
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in front garden. Comes back fairly well despite being smothered by phlox. I'm down to about 4 or 5. Planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2009, and they had dwindled to only 2 by their second season.

Plant: Hyacinth "Carnegie"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 10/28/07
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted 12 from Van Dyck's in back garden. They look great with the Toronto tulips behind them. Only a few came back in 2007, possibly due to a bad winter or maybe due to hungry chipmunks. Planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2007 which all came up, then was down to four the following year. I suspect the millions of voles who live in the tunnels below this garden.

Plant: Hyacinth "China Pink"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 11/2/08
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in front garden. Nice pale pink bloom. Moved to a new location in the front garden in fall 2009.

Plant: Hyacinth "Gypsy Queen"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 12
Planted: 10/4/05
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. I wasn't expecting to like this color, but I do. Only a few came back in 2008, so I planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2008 in the back garden and removed the only one that came up in the old location in 2009. Doing well as of 2011.

Plant: Hyacinth "Woodstock"
Source: Van Dyck's, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 22
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted 12 in far back garden. One bulb was not the correct variety, so I removed it. Nice burgundy/dark purple hyacinth. Didn't come back after two seasons. Planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in the front garden.

Plant: Hyacinth "Yellow Queen"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 10/18/09
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in front garden. Not very impressive so far, and only one came back its second year. May have been a victim of rodents.

Plant: Hyacinth "White Festival"
Source: Breck's
Quantity: 6
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in side garden. Their first season, they looked much like standard hyacinths, except floppier, more loosely packed and with several flowers per bulb. These had much more foliage and much narrower flowers their second season and looked more like a single bushy plant. I'm not crazy about them, but they come back reliably every year.

Plant: Hyacinth "City of Haarlem"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 12
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Planted in far back garden. These are pale yellow hyacinths. One can never have too many hyacinths. The sturdy blooms and the heavenly scent are wonderful. These were pretty small by their third season and the pine tree behind them has nearly overgrown them, but they're still coming back.

Plant: Double Hyacinth "Hollyhock"
Source: Van Dyck's, Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 12
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted 6 from Van Dyck's in side garden. These are very bright pink. Planted 6 more from Van Bourgondien on 10/29/05. Did well for many years but are now dwindling quickly.

Plant: Spring Snowflakes
Source: Van Bourgondien, Van Dyck's
Quantity: 17
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Only three of the first seven bulbs we planted produced blooms their first season, but all seven bloomed their second season. Planted 10 more on 10/3/05. Moved the bulbs to a different location in the back garden to make room for a patio extension in August 2006 and they are doing very well.

Plant: Daffodil "February Gold"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in front garden in response to my daughter's concern that I don't have enough yellow in early spring, since my daffodil choices tends to be later blooming white flowers. It was a good move, because the bright yellow really pops out against the pink and blue hyacinths around them. Dug up, split, and moved these to a different location in the front garden. There's much more foliage than flower these days, but I'm hoping they'll rebound as the tiny bulbs get larger.

Plant: Daffodil "Rijnveld's Early Sensation"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/28/07
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted in back garden. These are nice, standard yellow daffodils with short, sturdy stems. The blooms last for almost three weeks. I highly recommend these.

Plant: Daffodil Mix
Source: Park Seeds
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Free with purchase. Regular readers will know that I dislike mixed bulbs, so I tucked them in the far back garden where I can use them as cut flowers. The mix includes yellow blooms in slightly different sizes and some white/yellow blooms. The different varieties mean the blooms are still coming late in April. They're starting to dwindle.

Plant: Narcissus "Thalia"
Source: Target, Park Seed
Quantity: 35
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted 15 from Target in front garden mixed with Star of Persia christophii alliums. These bloom pure white, instead of white and yellow fading to white. There are several flower heads on each stem. They look terrific mixed in with all of the purple and pink flowers around them. They come back reliably every year. Planted 20 more from Park Seed in the back garden in fall 2007 because I love these so much. Dug up, split, and moved the original 15 in the front garden, but they have multiplied so much there are probably over 100 bulbs now, but very few are blooming.

Plant: Daffodil "Palmares"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 10
Planted: 10/29/05
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. These are very pretty, with peach ruffled cups that fade to white. These have come back reliably every year. The only problem with these is that the stems are very long and these tend to fall down easily in a rainstorm.

Plant: Daffodil "Pink Wonder"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 15
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Now that I know that pink daffodils are not really pink, I was not horrified when these opened with bright yellow blooms. The yellow changes to light peach within a few days, then to a pure pastel pink. These are really beautiful, with very unusual petals. Planted in front garden. They come back every year reliably. Dug up, split, and moved these to a different location in the front garden in 2009. They've multiplied into well over 50 bulbs but aren't blooming well.

Plant: Daffodil "Carlton"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/18/09
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in front garden. Nice, large daffodil with a long-lasting bloom, but only got four blooms their second season.

Plant: Double Daffodil "Erlicheer"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 15
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Each stem contains many tiny flowers, all contained in a single capsule (I don't know the official term for the thing that daffodil blooms are in just before blooming). Most of the flower heads on a stem looked full four days after the first tiny flower bloomed. They are gorgeous and have a wonderful fragrance similar to plumeria. The foliage remains as late as August or September. The foliage and buds came up in December 2004 and froze so badly that they didn't bloom in 2005. Only a few bloomed in 2006, and most of the buds froze in 2007, but they finally bloomed again in 2008. Moved these to the back garden in fall 2009.

Plant: Gardenia Daffodil "Cheerfulness"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Planted at corner of side garden and back garden. These are tall with fairly small blooms. Increase in foliage every year but the blooms started to decrease by 2010. Divided them in June 2010 so they'd have room to bloom again.

Plant: Daffodil "Pipit"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 11/2/08
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Planted in far back garden. These start out fully yellow then the cup fades to white. Each stem has two blooms, with three on some. I love these and they keep coming back.

Plant: Daffodil "Silver Chimes"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 10/18/09
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Planted in front garden. There are four blooms on each stem, but only two of these bulbs produced flowers their first season. Did better its second and third year. Each stem has 3 - 4 blooms on it.

Plant: Anemone "White Splendour"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 11/3/08
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in back garden. Foliage appears in late March. The foliage looks like a single plant. Blooms for a full month. These did even better their second season.

Plant: Fritillaria meleagris (Checkered Lily)
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/3/05
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Originally planted 20 in front garden. These filled in better each year. Removed from front garden in summer 2009 and planted 20 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in the kitchen garden in fall 2009.

Plant: Allium "Globemaster"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 8
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early May
Notes: Planted three in fall 2003, then planted five more in back garden in fall 2004. Moved the ones in front to the back on 6/19/05. Blooming is a slow process, so it is close to a week between starting to open and being in full bloom. The foliage is entirely gone by late June. These multiply every year. These are very sturdy, striking flowers and I love these. These have multiplied so much that we dug up one clump on 6/13/08 and moved it into six new locations to spread these out.

Plant: Allium "White Giant"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 5
Planted: 11/2/08
Blooms: Mid-May
Notes: Planted in far back garden. Wow! These things are four feet tall! The blooms are baseball-sized, similar to Allium Globemaster, except the stems are much longer.

Plant: Hyacinth hispanica "Excelsior"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 11/15/09
Blooms: Mid-May
Notes: Planted in far back garden. Only two bulbs produced blooms their first year, but did much better its second year.

Plant: Allium Christophii "Stars of Persia"
Source: Ace Hardware, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Late May
Notes: Originally planted six in front garden mixed with Thalia daffodils. These are larger, prettier, shorter, and longer lasting than Purple Sensation, and I love them. These take a full week from when they first start opening until they are in full bloom. They did not come back as strong after their first season, probably because they were crowded by the Thalia planted among them, dwindling to just one bloom in spring 2007. Planted 10 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in the kitchen garden in fall 2007, and pulled the old ones that came up in front in 2008.

Plant: Allium "Atropurpureum"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 10/28/07
Blooms: Early June
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. Only 3 bloomed in 2008, and at most I've gotten two blooms a season since then.

Plant: Arum Italicum
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 10/28/07
Blooms: Late May
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. Produces a huge bloom seemingly overnight. Produces red berries in late July but all of the foliage is gone by then. New foliage appears in late August. Coming back stronger every year.

Plant: Colchicum Byzantinum
Source: Alisonville Nursery
Quantity: 3
Planted: 8/15/04
Blooms: Mid-September
Notes: Originally planted in front garden around colchicum "The Giant." Moved to back garden in summer 2009 next to "The Giant" again, where they are getting overrun by a lamb's ear plant.

Plant: Colchicum "The Giant"
Source: Van Bourgondien, Van Dyck's, Park Seed
Quantity: 6
Planted: 8/10/03
Blooms: Mid-September
Notes: These flowers are so pretty, that even manly, non-gardeners comment on how beautiful they are. The foliage comes up in the spring. Planted one from Van Bourgondien in fall 2003. Planted another from Van Dyck's in the back garden in fall 2006. Planted four more from Park Seed in the back garden in fall 2007 and moved the remaining bulbs to this location in summer 2009.

Plant: Colchicum "Waterlily"
Source: Van Bourgondien, Van Dyck's, Park Seed
Quantity: 4
Planted: 9/10/04
Blooms: Early October
Notes: Planted two from Van Bourgondien in front garden among phlox. Only one came up in 2005, but it didn't come up in 2006, so I bought another one to plant from Van Dyck's in Fall 2006. Planted one more from Park Seed in the same location in fall 2007. Moved the only remaining bulb to the back garden in fall 2009, then moved it and split into two bulbs in May 2011.

Plant: Colchicum Alboplenum "White Waterlily"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 3
Planted: 9/10/04
Blooms: Mid-October
Notes: Planted 2 from Van Bourgondien in front garden among phlox. These bulbs are consistently three times as expensive as other colchicum bulbs for some reason, but they are worth it because they bloom and bloom. The two I have produce more blooms each year. Planted one more from Park Seed in the same location in fall 2007. These have multiplied well. Split and moved them to the back garden in fall 2009, where they continue to multiply.

Removed or Disappeared

Plant: Crocosmia "Lucifer"
Source: Brent & Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 10
Planted: 4/28/10
Blooms: Mid-August
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. Only five came up and only one bloomed, and nothing bloomed their second year. I'm yanking whatever comes up in the future.

Plant: Allium "Schubertii"
Source: Van Dyck's, Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 8
Planted: 10/3/05
Blooms: Late May
Notes: Planted in back garden. These are very short with gigantic blooms. I love these! A single bloom in a narrow vase makes an amazing display for the office. Planted 5 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in the same location in fall 2007, but only a few came up in 2008 and nothing came up in 2009. Planted 5 more from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in fall 2009 in far back garden. No blooms their second season. I can take a hint. Three strikes and you're out, Schubertii.

Plant: Daffodil "Katie Heath"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 11/2/08
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Planted in back garden. These start out with yellow cups that fade to pink. They're short and face down. About one in three stems has two blooms on it. These are a little boring but they smell fantastic. Only eight came back their second season and none came back their third or fourth, so I yanked them.

Plant: Daffodil "Little Gem"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 20
Planted: 10/28/07
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in front under weeping cherry tree. Bloomed their first season and that's it. The foliage keeps coming back but only because I haven't gotten around to digging them up.

Plant: Allium "Purple Sensation"
Source: Sundown Gardens, Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 10
Planted: Spring 2003, Spring 2004
Blooms: Late April
Notes: We bought four post-bloom plants in pots from Sundown Gardens in spring 2003 before we knew about the availability of fall bulbs. Bought another plant in spring 2004. Ony one bud appeared in 2004, and only one bud appeared in 2005. We had 10 bulbs in the back yard for two years and moved the surviving five bulbs to the front to join the others. These started to improve in 2006 and did a little better every year until 2009 when we got only four blooms. We removed them when we redid our front garden in 2009.

Plant: Crocus "Vanguard"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 30
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Early March
Notes: These are a pleasant light blue color with alternating lighter petals. These eventually stopped blooming.

Plant: Spring Starflower "Wisley Blue"
Source: Breck's
Quantity: 25
Planted: 10/22/05
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Planted in back garden. Smaller and paler blue than Rolf Fiedler, but they did better than Rolf did, even though they're only two feet away in the same garden. Foliage appears in the fall. Finally removed them in 2009 after not doing anything.

Plant: Snow Crocus "Advance"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 25
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Early March
Notes: Planted in front garden next to the step. Did not bloom after their third year and there's almost no foliage left, so I'm pronouncing these gone.

Plant: Daffodil "Irene Copeland"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 18
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Part of my ongoing effort to plant everything with the name "Irene." Planted in far back garden beneath the mimosa tree. These are gorgeous blooms with lots of white and yellow petals that fill out to become little half-pompoms. They bloom for weeks and last over a week as cut flowers. The blooms eventually fade to pure white. I really like these, but only a few bloomed their second year, even though all of the foliage came back. By their third year, only two partial blooms appeared, so I removed them.

Plant: Miniature Daffodil "Minnow"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 25
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Planted in kitchen garden. The blooms are very tiny; only 1/2 inch across. Only four bulbs produced flowers in 2005, but they did better in 2006 and 2007, but they dwindled down to only foliage by 2009, so out they came.

Plant: Daffodil "Bell Song"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 30
Planted: 10/30/04
Blooms: Mid-April
Notes: Nice, reliable flowers with several pink-cupped blooms per bulb. These took a beating when we planted a Japanese maple right on top of them in 2008, so I finally removed the last of them in 2009.

Plant: Hyacinth "Red Magic"
Source: Breck's
Quantity: 6
Planted: 10/22/06
Blooms: Early April
Notes: Planted in back garden. These are shown and described in the catalogs as being red with a white eye, but as you can see in this photo, they are just standard pink hyacinths. By their third season, I only had one sickly plant left so out it came.

Plant: Crocus "Ladykiller"
Source: Brent & Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 100
Planted: 10/15/04
Blooms: Mid-March
Notes: Planted in a wavy line with Romance and White Triumphator crocus behind spa room, where the rabbits feasted on them. I love the color on these. These eventually disappeared as rabbits ate them and we dug up the spaces around them for plants.

Plant: Snow Crocus "White Triumphator"
Source: Brent & Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 100
Planted: 10/15/04
Blooms: Late January - Late February
Notes: Planted in a wavy line with Ladykiller and Romance crocus behind spa room. These eventually disappeared as rabbits ate them and we dug up the spaces around them for plants.

Plant: Snow Crocus "Romance"
Source: Brent & Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 100
Planted: 10/15/04
Blooms: Early March
Notes: Planted in a wavy line with Ladykiller and White Triumphator crocus behind spa room. The rabbits feasted on these, so it was difficult to get a photo with many blooms open. These eventually disappeared as rabbits ate them and we dug up the spaces around them for plants.

Plant: Crocus "Miss Vain"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 50
Planted: 10/22/05

Plant: Liatris Spicata and Liatris Alba Mix
Source: Langeveld
Quantity: 60
Planted: 4/15/06
Blooms: Mid-July
Notes: We planted 10 from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in the side garden in 2004, but less than half came up and we ended up replacing them with other plants. The new bulbs were in the far back garden and did much better. The purple blooms appeared before the white ones. Removed when the evergreens on either side smothered them.

Plant: Allium "Hair"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 10
Planted: 10/3/05
Blooms: Late May
Notes: Planted in front garden. These are very tall and just as bizarre as shown in the catalogs, but I liked them more than I was expecting because they are so unusual. However, their novelty wore off a bit and they were much too tall for the front garden, so I removed them.

Plant: Muscari "Golden Fragrance"
Source: Brent and Becky's Bulbs
Quantity: 25
Planted: 10/28/07
Blooms: Late April
Notes: Planted in far back garden. These were healthy and did well, but they were hideous. Instead of being bright yellow and purple, they looked more like lime green and darker green. They were taking up valuable space that could be used for lovely tulips or daffodils, so out they went.

Plant: Bi-color Blue Grape Hyacinths
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 70
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted 20 under tree in front garden. They are surprisingly tall; much taller than their white counterparts. Planted 50 more on 10/15/04. Most of these got disturbed or buried when we replaced our front tree with an evergreen in 2005, but several came back in 2006. I'm removing these as they come up since I filled in the area where they were with cultivar "Blue Magic" which doesn't match as well as I was expecting. Since Van Bourgondien doesn't always give cultivar names for their bulbs, I had no way of matching these other than guessing.

Plant: White Trumpet Daffodils
Source: Don't remember
Quantity: 16
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early April
Notes: These are white with a yellow cup that fades to pure white after a day or two. Each stem produces a single flower. Only one bloom appeared in 2006 after two seasons of doing very well. I removed them in 2006 to make room for a patio extension.

Plant: Crocus "Tricolour"
Source: Breck's
Quantity: 25
Planted: 10/15/04
Blooms: Mid-March
Notes: Planted near daffodils in back garden. Removed them in 2006 to make room for a patio extension, but I would plant them again.

Plant: Daffodil "Double Tresamble"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 18
Planted: 10/9/04
Blooms: Early May
Notes: Planted in small garden behind spa. These are the latest of our daffodils and were worth the wait, but we dug them up to redo the spa garden and these rotted in the bucket while they waited to be transplanted.

Plant: Colchicum Cilicicum "Rose"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 2
Planted: 9/10/04
Blooms: Mid-September
Notes: Planted in back garden among feather hyacinths, and the spring foliage prevented half of the hyacinths from blooming. Beware the very huge foliage of the colchicum! We removed these bulbs on 9/24/05 to make room for the hyacinths.

Plant: Winter Aconite
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 12
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Late March
Notes: Planted under tree in front garden, along with grape hyacinths and snowdrops. These little flowers are like blossoms on sticks, and they appear out of nowhere. They're cute, but really don't go with my pink/purple/blue garden, so I removed them once their blooms faded.

Plant: Narcissus "Golden Bells"
Source: Van Dyck's
Quantity: 8
Planted: Fall 2003
Blooms: Early April
Notes: These are very tiny flowers. The single orange cup is less than an inch long, and the stems are about 6 inches long. These were a free bonus for placing my Van Dyck's order online. They were planted in the front garden, but they clashed with the pink, purple, and blue color scheme up front so I removed them.

Plant: Triplet Lily "Queen Fabiola"
Source: Van Bourgondien
Quantity: 35
Planted: 4/3/04
Blooms: 7/10/04
Notes: Planted in front garden. These did better than the "Corrina" triplet lilies we planted then pulled in the back yard, but only 6 - 7 plants appeared, and only 2 of those bloomed. Since these were the same color and weren't as nice as the Blue Chip campanula next to them, I removed these on 4/8/05.

Bulbs planted as of Fall 2005: 1831
