Thursday, July 4, 2002: We spent our day in Helsinki shopping,
since having an old-fashioned American picnic on our nation's birthday
was not an option.
As we always do in bookstores in foreign countries, we searched
for a Que book with my ex-husband's name in the credits as the acquisitions
editor. It cracks us up that we can find his name in print around
the world. Here's one of his books.

Tom carries the spoils of our shopping, after a delicious fast food
lunch at a hamburger chain we've never heard of. |
 |
We stopped for beers at an outdoor cafe, and were the only ones
remaining when it started to rain. Fortunately, we had just purchased
an umbrella at our very favorite store, H&M, and didn't let the
rain bother us. We lifted the umbrella briefly to take this shot of
me, Stockmann's department store and a very, uh, detailed statue of
some men symbolizing something important, I'm sure. |

We spent so much time shopping, we hardly remembered to photograph
Helsinki. Here we are, leaving the harbor.
